The Baltimore Orioles have signed former Texas Rangers outfielder Leody Taveras to a one-year, $2 million contract, as reported by MLB insider Mike Rodriguez. The move means Rangers fans won’t see him as often now that he’s in the American League East.
Taveras, 27, played for the Rangers from 2020 to 2025 before being claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners in early May. He struggled in Seattle, hitting .174/.198/.272 (35 OPS+) across 98 plate appearances, which led to his demotion to Triple-A Tacoma. There, he rebounded with a .280/.358/.446 line in 81 games for the Rainiers.
Across 505 games with Texas, Taveras recorded a .240/.291/.370 slash line, hitting 39 home runs and driving in 168 runs, accumulating 5.1 bWAR. His best season came in 2023, when he posted a career-high 2.9 bWAR with a 101 OPS+, playing a key role in the Rangers’ first-ever World Series championship.
During the 2023 American League Championship Series, Taveras hit a solo home run off Justin Verlander in Game 1 and robbed Yordan Alvarez of a home run in Game 5.
Taveras is expected to provide depth across all three outfield positions but will likely see the most playing time in center field, where Baltimore has the greatest need. If his performance mirrors his production in Triple-A, he could push for a regular starting role.
Taveras, after struggles in Seattle, joins Baltimore on a one-year deal, aiming to regain form and contribute as a versatile outfielder for the Orioles.
