Former Liberal leader John Hewson has launched a sharp critique against Sussan Ley and the Liberal Party, condemning their lack of strategic direction and leadership as internal divisions deepen.
After two weeks marked by internal disputes and speculation about leadership, opposition leader Sussan Ley convened a series of meetings to finalise the party’s approach to energy and emissions policy. Meanwhile, John Hewson openly questioned her ability to lead effectively.
“She hasn't shown any clear strategy, or any strong capacity in terms of leadership,” he told AAP.
Hewson, who resigned his party membership in 2019 due to dissatisfaction with its stance on climate change, accused the opposition of lacking substantive policies. He attributed this to a shortage of members with practical experience beyond politics.
“They haven't got people with significant business experience ... I don't think that they've got people who are policy wonks in economic policy,” he said.
Hewson warned that persistent negativity and reliance on criticism were not sustainable political strategies.
“You can't just keep being negative and hoping to win on criticism, as (Tony) Abbott did.”
Former Liberal leader John Hewson has strongly criticised Sussan Ley’s leadership, urging the party to move beyond internal conflict and develop credible, forward-looking policies.
