Rochester's Last Subway Car Restoration

A Rochester relic from the early 20th century is being restored at the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum.

The city's subway system operated for almost 30 years before shutting down in 1956 due to low ridership and the rise of automobile travel.

"where we get the traction motors and the trucks rehabilitated so that it could be actually run under its own propulsion,"

said museum volunteer and past president Jeremy Tuke, who noted the project has been underway for several years.

The restoration will occur in two phases, with the first focusing on upholstery and finishings, and the second on mechanical work.
