Australia’s batsman Matthew Short admitted that facing Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy has been a real challenge due to his speed and unpredictable variations. Teams are gearing up for next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, where spin conditions are expected to play a major role.
In the ongoing T20I series, Varun Chakravarthy has already taken four wickets in two bowling innings. His control and quick delivery make him a key figure in India’s pursuit of a series victory Down Under.
“What makes it harder is just how quick he bowls,” Matthew Short said on Wednesday, ahead of the fourth T20I at Carrara in Gold Coast.
“We’ve obviously watched a lot of footage and whatnot. But yeah, that’s probably going to be the other challenge heading to India if it is spinning or in Sri Lanka as well.”
Short explained that while Australian pitches offer less spin, understanding bowlers like Varun will be key in adapting to subcontinental surfaces.
“So here in Australia, there’s probably not as much spin as it is in the subcontinent, obviously. But yeah, he’s a tough one and one we’ll have to look out for,” Short added.
The top-order batter, who is competing for a place in Australia’s T20 World Cup squad, said he values the experience of playing against world-class Indian bowlers. However, he recognized that conditions in the upcoming tournament will be vastly different.
“There are always ways to improve.”
Matthew Short acknowledges Varun Chakravarthy’s pace and precision as Australia sharpens its strategy for spin-heavy subcontinental conditions ahead of the T20 World Cup.
