The Los Angeles Lakers have opened the 2025–26 season strongly with a 6–2 record, led by five-time All-NBA First Team guard Luka Dončić and likely All-Star Austin Reaves. Despite their strong start, veteran forward LeBron James, a 21-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion, has not yet appeared this season after being diagnosed with sciatica during the preseason.
At age 40, the future Hall of Famer is reportedly progressing toward a return. ESPN’s Shams Charania provided a recent update suggesting that James is moving closer to participating fully in team practices.
“LeBron James has been working out individually, and I'm told the next step for him is 5-on-5 live play,” Charania said during ESPN’s NBA Countdown with Malika Andrews on Wednesday.
“I was told today that Lakers personnel are still operating under the belief that LeBron James’ debut will be around mid-November, but this is uncharted territory.”
James is set to turn 41 next month and is entering his 23rd NBA season. General manager Rob Pelinka’s offseason additions—Jake LaRavia, Deandre Ayton, and Marcus Smart—have proven valuable, helping sustain Los Angeles’ depth and performance during James’ absence.
LeBron James is closing in on his long-awaited return to the Lakers lineup as team officials expect his season debut around mid-November following positive rehab progress.
