Surprising Flyers Power Play Hits Top Half of NHL Rankings

Thirteen games into the current NHL season, the Philadelphia Flyers’ power play ranks 14th in the league at 20.9 percent heading into Thursday night’s matchup against Nashville. This is no longer a mere early season fluke — it’s a clear sign of real progress.

Over the past four seasons, the Flyers finished in the bottom of the league on the power play, posting results of 32nd, 32nd, 32nd, and 30th. Now, those difficult stretches appear to be behind them. The team has recorded six power-play goals in its last six games, including two in Tuesday’s comeback victory over the Montreal Canadiens.

During Wednesday’s practice at the Bell Centre, head coach Rick Tocchet provided his perspective on the team’s improvement.

“With power plays, during the year, you’re going to have ebbs and flows,” Tocchet said. “My big thing from my history of coaching is you can’t be frustrated by it. Sometimes you have to take what a team gives you.”

That approach seems to be working. In Tuesday night’s 5-4 shootout win, the Flyers capitalized on a two-man advantage lasting 1:32. Cam York scored on the 5-on-3 opportunity, followed shortly by Bobby Brink on the 5-on-4 to put the Flyers ahead 3-0 early in the game.

Author’s Summary
