NTSB Briefing Reveals CVR Data in UPS Jet Crash

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) held a press briefing on Friday regarding the crash of a UPS cargo jet in Louisville, Kentucky. Board member Todd Inman and investigator Chihoon Shin shared new details from the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) recovered from the site.

Inman began by extending condolences to the victims’ families and thanking first responders and local authorities for their continued support during recovery efforts. He noted that the investigative team has been encouraged by the quality of the audio data retrieved from the CVR.

“The cockpit voice recorder contained two hours and four minutes of what we consider good quality digital recorded audio,” said Inman.

According to the NTSB, the recording captured the flight crew performing standard pre-flight checklists and briefings before takeoff. The takeoff phase proceeded routinely through the various speed callouts.

However, about thirty-seven seconds after the crew called for takeoff thrust, a recurring bell tone was heard on the CVR. The sound persisted for roughly twenty-five seconds until the end of the recording, while the crew worked to regain control of the plane before impact.
