Residents of the Shropshire villages Worthen and Brockton have united to create an 11-metre cascade of poppies adorning the tower of All Saints Church. The work stands as a major tribute for Remembrance Day and highlights the enduring community spirit of the area.
Following a call from the local branch of the Royal British Legion, villagers crafted around 1,600 poppies through knitting, crocheting, and other creative efforts. Beyond the main cascade, additional poppy decorations were featured throughout the village: strands were hung across hedges, upright stems decorated gardens, and even red paper plates were turned into touching floral tributes.
“With 2025 marking the 80th anniversary of VE and VJ Day, and effectively the end of hostilities in World War Two, we wanted to encourage groups young and old to ‘turn the village red’ in any way they could,” explained committee member Denise Renson.
Vice chairperson Ann Wilde joined Renson in initiating the project, drawing inspiration from similar displays seen elsewhere. Their vision culminated in a vivid and communal act of remembrance that has become a centerpiece of local pride.
