House Fire in Canterbury Results in One Death and Critical Injury

One person has died and another is critically injured after a fire broke out in a house in Canterbury overnight.

Fire and Emergency NZ responded to the incident on Dunford St, Rakaia, at approximately 11:15pm on Saturday. Fire crews from Rakaia and Ashburton attended the scene.

A police spokesperson confirmed that one person had died and another was critically injured in the fire. The death will be referred to the coroner.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman reported that there were persons unaccounted for in the fire.

Crews arrived to find the home well ablaze and worked to extinguish the fire and locate the unaccounted individuals. A fire investigator will visit the scene later today.
