Canada must mandate corporate accountability

Corporate Accountability in Canada

Companies must be mandated to prevent human rights abuses and environmental destruction throughout their supply chains.

The federal government is failing to take necessary steps to hold corporations accountable for human rights and environmental abuses, relying on companies to act on expectations and encouragement instead.

It’s a serious and widespread problem.

Of the 200 largest economic entities by revenue in the world, 157 are corporations, not countries, and some take harmful actions, including draining or polluting water supplies, emitting greenhouse gases, and bypassing Indigenous rights.

Corporations are largely left to decide which global voluntary standards to implement, including emissions targets, codes of conduct, and ethical sourcing policies.

Author's summary: Canada needs corporate accountability laws.
